Praise for "Animals in Our Flesh"

I like the way the poems grab at two disparate pieces of life and merge them into a beautiful feeling that makes sense on an altered level, a transcendent level, a level that’s infused with a broken heart’s love. The words track the relationship between the soul and day to day common life, the words touch the evasive nature of life like fingerprints on flesh, I like the way the poems undulate between mind/heart/soul, blending them into a wholesome evocation of what it his to be alive.

Zachary Kluckman’s new poetry collection, Animals in Our Flesh is packed with astounding metaphors.  In the first poem, “Forgiveness is a Small Boat,” I was stopped in my tracks when I read “The heart is a drunken architect/full of blue-prints and skyscrapers./No one understands his designs.”  There are many more insightful metaphors scattered throughout this book.  Throughout, there are Zach’s perceptive observation of the human condition, as when he writes in “Rain in the Desert” . . . The blank boredom of store clerks/longing for cigarette breaks or a shot of Vodka/in the bathroom before the time clock/eats their lunch for them.”  These poems are forged in desire, steeped in tragedy, and tempered by humor. Reader, enjoy.
